Important Information for Guests...

Thanks for coming to our little ol' website packed with (hopefully) useful information.  Above all else, we want to make sure our guests are happy and prepared for a great time.

BBQ:

We hope all of you can attend our pre-wedding BBQ.  We are trying to make this a "green" event as well.  While we cannot boast having all reusable items, we are trying to make as much compostable as possible.

Compostable items you may find at this event may include (but certainly are not limited to):

  • sugar cane based bowls
  • recycled paper plates
  • corn-based drinking straws
  • corn-based drinking cups
  • corn-based forks & knives (spoons and steak knives will be metal and re-donated after use)
  • recycled napkins
  • compostable biobags to put it all in

Children:

Judd Creek Farm has a pond—a rather large pond that will only be sectioned off by decorative ribbon.  Please be aware of this when considering bringing children to this event.  While we would love to see you with your children, if you think the temptation to go near the water could be too great for them, it may be safest to keep them at home.  Plus, our lawyer has kindly asked us to officially disclaim liability and whatnot for objects, people, animals, and anything else that may end up in the water.

Attire:

We've been asked to clear up these issues for those who like to plan their outfits ahead of time.  I believe the dress code should be on the casual side of semi-formal.  For the ladies, dresses if you so desire, no stringing you up by your toes if you decide not to wear one.  Suits and whatnot are nice, but certainly not mandatory for the gents.

And as far as the shoes--the farm has many soft surfaces such as grass and -- depending on the weather -- a little mud (but let's hope not!) as well as some uneven terrain.  Please be aware of this when choosing shoes.  As much as the grass may enjoy the aerating, your feet may not.

What is a "Green" Wedding?

This term has become trendy recently; the definition we are choosing to use is an event that is done with sustainability in mind.

We have carefully considered the impact of our reception's components on the island and the earth.  We are working specifically with local vendors, local products, and local food to make this a low-impact, high-enjoyment affair.  At the event we will be recycling, composting, and using closed-loop products as much as possible.  We are trying to use nothing disposable unless it was recycled to begin with or is compostable.

In addition to the above items, we have taken steps to offset the carbon emissions created by our guests while travelling to our event (more about this in the Registry section).  Please visit www.carbonfund.org for more information.

What can I do to help?

We're glad you asked! For starters, we are encouraging our guests to carpool to (and on) Vashon Island, and to recycle the materials they use at the reception (placing compostable and recyclable items in the appropriate bins, etc.).

Although we have more than enough dishes to accommodate food and drinks for everyone, we would love to see folks reusing their glasses so as to reduce the waste and energy required to clean extras.  We understand that we will be impacting the delicate island of Vashon by having such a big event there, so we are trying to take as many steps as possible to minimize the impact and contribute to the recovery process.

 Speaking of Wedding...

The big event we're preparing for is technically a reception celebrating our wedding and not a wedding ceremony proper.  Due to logistics, stage fright, short attention spans, and fear of people missing their ferries, we're having a tiny immediate-family-only ceremony earlier that day, then celebrating it at the big party that afternoon and evening.  Joining together in festive celebration with our friends and family will be the best kind of support/validation our marriage could have.
